salito's crab house & prime rib

Around San Francisco, the season usually begins in November, and cracked crab is as much a tradition at some Bay Area Thanksgiving tables as turkey. We buy only Dungeness crab that weighs at least two plus pounds (for those meaty legs) and is harvested from the nearby Pacific Ocean. The menu for Salito's Crab House & Prime Rib may have changed since the last user update. That strong architecture has been maintained in the transition to Salito’s Crab House. Native to coastal waters from southern California to the Aleutians, Dungeness crab (Cancer magister) is the main commercial crab species south of Alaska, with important landings in nearly every fishing port north of Santa Barbara. It's a fairly large species, weighing about a pound and a quarter apiece in the minimum legal size (6-1/4 inches across the carapace, or upper shell) and running up to about 3 pounds. Most of the catch is consumed close to home, but some gets shipped to other parts of the country both fresh and frozen.

Capital Gains Tax on Home Sales

sales tax selling house

A capital gain is simply the increase in value of an asset from when you purchased it. When you sell the asset and take the profit, you “realize” the gain and may have to pay a tax on that capital gain. Homeowners can avoid paying taxes on the sale of a home by reinvesting the proceeds from the sale into a similar property through a 1031 exchange. This like-kind exchange—named after Internal Revenue Code Section 1031—allows for the exchange of like property with no other consideration or like property including other considerations, such as cash. The 1031 exchange allows for the tax on the gain from the sale of a property to be deferred, rather than eliminated.

What is the sales tax rate in Los Angeles?

Your expert can work with you in real time and maximize your deductions, finding every dollar you deserve, guaranteed. We’ll search over 350 deductions and credits so you don’t miss a thing. In the past, you may have put off paying the tax on a gain from the sale of a home, usually because you used the proceeds from the sale to buy another home. Under the old rules, this was referred to as "rolling over" gain from one home to the next.

Do I have to pay the capital gains tax if I sell a second home or rental property?

You will continue to receive communications, including notices and letters, in English until they are translated to your preferred language. Go to IRS.gov/Account to securely access information about your federal tax account. If ANY of the three bullets above is true, skip to Determine whether your home sale is an installment sale, later. For each number on your “Total” worksheet, figure the business-related portion of that number and enter it on your “Business or Rental” worksheet. You may use different methods to determine the business portion of different numbers. Here are the three possible methods and the circumstances under which each method applies.

Are there taxes on the sale of a property?

Let’s say you bought your home for $150,000 and you sold it for $200,000. Your profit, $50,000 (the difference between the two prices), is your capital gain – and it may be subject to the tax. If you’re selling your primary residence, you may be able to avoid paying the capital gains tax on the first $250,000 gain if you’re a single tax filer and $500,000 for married couples filing jointly. Let's say that your cost basis in a duplex is $250,000 and that you've owned it for 10 years. Over the 10-year ownership period, you've claimed a total of $90,900 in depreciation expense. If you sell the property now for net proceeds of $350,000, you'll owe long-term capital gains tax on your $100,000 net profit plus depreciation recapture on $90,900, which is taxed at your marginal tax rate.

Even if you use the installment method to defer some of the gain, the exclusion of gain under Section 121 remains available. Refer to Publication 537, Installment Sales, Form 6252, Installment Sale Income, and Topic no. 705, Installment sales, for more information on installment sales. In addition to capital gains tax, sellers in California may need to pay transfer taxes, which vary by location. Property taxes are prorated, and sellers are responsible for their portion of the taxes until the sale closes. Other expenses to anticipate include title fees, settlement fees, and potential negotiations over who pays for certain items. The IRS defines "home" broadly — your home could be a condo, a co-op, a mobile home or even a houseboat.

What to know about capital gains tax on a house sale

In community property states (Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin), each spouse is usually considered to own half of the community property. When either spouse dies, the total fair market value of the community property becomes the basis of the entire property, including the part belonging to the surviving spouse. For this rule to apply, at least half the value of the community property interest must be includible in the decedent's gross estate, whether or not the estate must file a return. Although we can’t respond individually to each comment received, we do appreciate your feedback and will consider your comments and suggestions as we revise our tax forms, instructions, and publications.

First, you’ll need to figure out the cost basis for your home. You’ll need to consider not only the total amount you spent to purchase the house but also how much you’ve spent on any additions or home improvements. So, for example, let’s say your original purchase price was $200,000 and you spent $20,000 on adding an extra room. To learn more about the capital gains tax on real estate properties, review the following frequently asked questions. Tax rates work slightly differently if you happen to be declaring a short-term capital gain sold by an estate or trust.

Learn more about the top tax benefits of real estate investing. Impact on your credit may vary, as credit scores are independently determined by credit bureaus based on a number of factors including the financial decisions you make with other financial services organizations. If you own more than one home, you should conduct a "facts and circumstances" test to make sure the home you're selling will be recognized as a principal residence by the IRS. All features, services, support, prices, offers, terms and conditions are subject to change without notice. For example, if the original cost of the home was $100,000 and you added a $5,000 patio, your adjusted basis becomes $105,000.

When you sell an asset for more than it cost you to acquire it, the difference is known as a capital gain. For example, if you paid $1,000 to buy stock and sell the same stock for $1,200 (net of expenses), you have a capital gain of $200. With an online account, you can access a variety of information to help you during the filing season. You can get a transcript, review your most recently filed tax return, and get your adjusted gross income. The IRS is committed to serving taxpayers with limited-English proficiency (LEP) by offering OPI services. The OPI Service is a federally funded program and is available at Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs), most IRS offices, and every VITA/TCE tax return site.

This means that you may be able to meet the two-year use test even if, because of your service, you did not actually live in your home for at least the required two years during the five years prior to the sale. However, the successful implementation of this strategy necessitates a nuanced understanding of tax regulations and financial implications. Collaboration with legal experts, tax advisers and financial planners is essential to ensure compliance and tailor the strategy to suit individual financial objectives. A large tax exemption enjoyed by many American home sellers for the past 27 years has been losing steam recently, according to a new study by CoreLogic. Liz Weston, Certified Financial Planner, is a personal finance columnist for the Los Angeles Times and NerdWallet. Questions may be sent to her at 3940 Laurel Canyon, No. 238, Studio City, CA 91604, or by using the “Contact” form at asklizweston.com.

And married couples or Registered Domestic Partners can save up to $500,000 using the capital gains real estate tax exemption. To qualify, you must live in the home for two of the five years before the sale. If you don’t live in a community property state, then only half of the house got the step up at his death (to $456,000, or half of $912,000). If the original purchase price of the home was $300,000, for example, your basis would be $150,000. The home’s total basis would be $606,000 (which is $456,000 plus $150,000).

If you received your home as a gift, you should keep records of the date you received it. Record the adjusted basis of the donor at the time of the gift and the fair market value of the home at the time of the gift. As a general rule, you will use the donor’s adjusted basis at the time of the gift as your basis. However, see Table 1 below to determine if any exceptions to this rule listed in the “IF” column apply. If your former spouse was the sole owner, your starting basis is the same as your former spouse's adjusted basis just before you received the home. If you co-owned the home with your spouse, add the adjusted basis of your spouse's half-share in the home to the adjusted basis of your own half-share to get your starting basis.

However, you must meet both tests during the 5-year period ending on the date of the sale. Generally, you're not eligible for the exclusion if you excluded the gain from the sale of another home during the two-year period prior to the sale of your home. Refer to Publication 523 for the complete eligibility requirements, limitations on the exclusion amount, and exceptions to the two-year rule. You will also need to report your home sale if you receive a Form 1099-S. That is unless you assure your real estate closing company that you will not owe taxes on your profit. If you receive a form even though you qualify for the exemption, this doesn’t necessarily mean you owe taxes.

There are bohemian cushions and plenty of flora adding vibrant pops. Eclectic trinkets pepper the lobby, from a croquet set to a shelf holding maracas, encyclopedias, and action figures. The coastal inspiration is clear from the decorative surfboards, lamps with rope knot bases, and elevator door painted to look like the sky. The outdoor pool deck, complete with music on the sound system and strung lights, is a popular -- sometimes crowded -- place for guests to lounge.

The Laguna Beach House hotel is right in the heart of downtown Laguna, just off North Coast Highway. It’s less than a two-hour drive from both Los Angeles and San Diego, making it an ideal weekend trip for those looking for some extra time to relax by the beach. For those coming from further away, the John Wayne Airport is only a 25-minute drive. There’s a reef just offshore where you’re sure to see beautiful coral and sea life. Note that during high tide the beach shrinks considerably and is mostly wet, but you’re all good to set up a seat here during low tide. For those who love to be on the water, the hotel also offers special packages.

It’s clearly dedicated to preserving the California surfer aesthetic, using curated vintage pieces from the local area as its primary décor elements. From the California flag in the lobby to the surfboard headboards, you’ll never forget where you are. Laguna Beach is home to many luxury and upscale design hotels, but the three-star Laguna Beach House has more of a laid-back surfer vibe.

The location is a major plus of Laguna Beach House; you have everything you need right within walking distance. It’s walkable to most of downtown Laguna and right behind Heisler Park. It’s also only a five-minute walk to the nearest beaches, so it’s an ideal place to be for anything you want to experience in Laguna.

It's within walking distance to Main Beach, restaurants, and shops. The motel-like exteriors can be misleading, but inside, it's a three-and-a-half pearl boutique hotel exuding sand- and surf-inspired character. Features like the hot tub and fire pit on the pool deck, plus the nightly wine hour, instantly put travelers in vacation mode. The 36 rooms offer a variety of brilliant views, and are kitted out with Keurig coffeemakers, ample closet space, and minibars. Guests should note the per-day charges for parking, plus mandatory nightly fees to cover amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, morning coffee/tea, and beach equipment. For an equally stellar location with similar features at lower rates, The Tides Inn is practically next door.

Special stay packages include surfing or stand-up paddleboard lessons, or Champagne and sweets on arrival. The hotel also sells custom-designed souvenirs at the front desk. Featuring a pool view from a private balcony, this room provides gourmet coffee and a pillow-top mattress. They have the look and feel of an open, airy surf cottage, and as I mentioned, vintage décor from the local area. It’s a bit on the simple side, but that’s OK, because you’re going to be out exploring most of the day anyway.

All rooms provide large dressers and closets, plus ironing equipment. Keurig coffeemakers are included, and decently-stocked minibars and baskets of snacks are available for purchase. Going for a jog along Heisler Park’s coastal walk right adjacent to the hotel is also a great way to get in a sweat. Despite the fact that there is no on-site restaurant, the hotel is located within walking distance of some great spots! Some solid options include Urth Cafe and Las Brisas Restaurant. If you enjoy wine tasting and are looking for something interesting to do, there is also the nearby Bianchi Winery & Tasting Room right up the street. During the day I opted for the adorable green and white striped lounge chairs, which have an umbrella should you want some shade. At night you could find me in a wooden Adirondack chair next to one of the fire pits (sipping my complimentary wine, of course).

While the pool itself isn’t large, lots of chairs with umbrellas, along with light music, make the space suitable for lounging when it’s not too crowded. Guests choose either Coastal Level King or Pool Level King or Queen rooms. Some Coastal Level Rooms include small, private balconies offering gorgeous ocean views. A handful of Pool Level Rooms come with private patios overlooking the water, hills, and pool deck.

Experience the timeless charm of classic Laguna while enjoying the open, airy atmosphere of this sun-drenched surf hotel within walking distance of Main Beach and downtown. There’s a park in between the hotel and the seaside cliff, which makes for an enjoyable five-minute walk to the beach. I’d even recommend setting aside some time to enjoy Heisler Park, which is a gorgeous coastal stroll, and check out the sculptures and gorgeous views along the way. There are plenty of activities within walking distance of the property so visitors can explore all that makes Laguna Beach unique. Plenty of shopping options, culinary delights, and art galleries can be found in the vicinity.

This bustling beach has a boardwalk, volleyball and basketball courts, and tide pools. It’s definitely more crowded than Diver’s Cove, but there’s always plenty of space to sit and work on your tan. Laguna Beach House’s open-concept design is forged by Southern California’s unique surf culture. Deluxe guest room surrounded by the serenity of the hotel’s pool, gardens, and ocean breezes. Choose from a King, King with Private Balcony or Queen/Queen with Private Balcony. One of my favorite things to do here is snag a spot outside by the pool area’s fire pit section and enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sets.

Checking In: Laguna Beach House (Hotel Review)

There are definitely some awesome beaches in Laguna that you will need to drive to, but that would be the same for any hotel you stay at as they’re all spread out down the coast. Offering free toiletries and bathrobes, this double room includes a private bathroom with a bath or a shower and a hairdryer. The spacious air-conditioned double room offers a flat-screen TV with cable channels, a mini-bar, a tea and coffee maker, a seating area as well as pool views.

My favorite coffee shop in the area, Blk Dot Coffee, which is also just a five-minute walk away. They have delicious slow-drip Vietnamese coffee, but don’t miss out on the food! Try one of their toasts, sandwiches, or my favorite, the Caprese Avocado Bowl, for a fresh breakfast or lunch option. The overall ambiance of the hotel definitely is one of the best parts of the Laguna Beach House hotel.

The ticket said to see a gate agent but there was no gate agent available. I was supposed to go to the kiosk. Ended up missing my flight and they said that I never checked in to my flight so there was nothing that could be done. Not even worth the hassle and poor customer service.

Charlotte - Newark Liberty Airport Flights

Packed in like sardines, very uncomfortable. Sitting the aisle my shoulder was rammed into numerous times by rushing flight attendants. We waited to takeoff for about 1 hour delay for a 20 min flight. Pilot was communicative, flight attendants were excellent. Really nice experience except my tv didn’t work.

After all, I'm a paying customer, and assisting a passenger who isn't knowledgeable about the aircraft is one of the things she's there for. We flew halfway to our destination (NYC to Burlington) and turned around due to a mechanical issue (landing gear wouldn’t retract automatically). We turned back to JFK for JetBlue’s benefit as we landed safely at JFK and could've just as easily landed safely in Burlington on our Christmas Day flight. Instead the company directed the crew to return the plane to more easily service the aircraft.

Overall it was a miserable experience... I will never fly spirit for more than a 3 hour flight or overnight. I had no legroom, although I paid for extra legroom. I could barely put my bag in front of my feet and under the seat. In fact the flight attendant said that they had to reboot it and see if it was going to work and never did.

I've had to personally encounter her twice in-flight. She was giving me an attitude while telling me where and how to open it since it's not the regular push to open type of door. The second one was when I had to throw trash then use the lavatory again.

Stewards were very kind and professional. The departure and arrival times were as promised. Seatback entertainment system did not work even when the flight attendant rebooted it. At least I had my cell phone to connect with wifi. The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise.

Boarded late and couldn’t get organized to serve snacks. Gate crew helping to scan tickets was a little short tempered with customers. Flight crew was very friendly, welcoming , and provided excellent service on board. The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

This shouldn't discourage you from searching as you can still find great deals by being flexible with your options. Use our search form to find deals on tickets to Newark Airport. There are 82 flights per week flying from Charlotte to New York (as of May 2024). Overall it was a good experience.

I asked “madam, why do you do that? ”, and she repeated “you’re not here”. It used to have a good customer service. Things have changed, but not for good. We were directed to go to a gate across from our gate. The plane wasn't there yet so we had to wait for it to arrive, then deplane everyone and then wait again for the plane to be cleaned.

We never got the exact reason why. When we got on the plane, the staff seemed to spend a very long time just milling around in the front of the plane. I also never figured out why the door to the cockpit was open for so long prior to leaving. All in all just a poor performance again from United. There is a reason we did not choose United for the international legs of this recent trip, overall dissatisfaction. I was offered 2 vouchers for inconvenience, but those vouchers aren’t usable.

7 times the house from Alfred Hitchocks ''Psycho'' appeared on TV

house in psycho

A well-known actor while shooting a big movie on the Universal lot back in 1999 dressed up as “mother” and leapt out from behind the Psycho house with an axe scaring the bejeesus out of everyone on the tram, including the guides. It is likely that I sound like a broken record at this point, but I love all things horror related. While this may not be one of the original monster movies that helped to keep this studio afloat (in fact, it isn’t even a Universal movie), it is one of the most iconic movies of its kind. It created the opportunity for future horror filmmakers to push the boundaries much like Alfred Hitchcock did 55 years ago. The Psycho House stands as a physical reminder of the impact Hitchcock made on the horror and suspense world.

Universal Orlando to announce new experiences, shows, parade, and more on...

As you approach the front steps of the house and take a close-up look you will be struck by the fact that, unlike many of the one-sided sets or facades on the Backlot, the Psycho house actually has four sides and a roof. April 8, 2015 – Welcome back to another edition of Zoom Lens, where we take a closer look at different attractions both in the park and in the studio. In light of the Psycho House restoration, I chose to give you guys a little history on this iconic set. The house was built in 1885 and still stands today, surrounded on one side by a railroad as in 1925.

Release

Like many miniseries from the time, Captains and the Kings brought together a star-studded cast to tell an epic story from the past. Richard Jordan starred as a poor Irish immigrant in the 1800s who built an empire of enormous wealth. Robert Vaughn, Patty Duke and Jane Seymour also appeared along with the Bates house, which got its own rags-to-riches makeover. In between its two appearances on Thriller, the house showed up in the classic Western Wagon Train. “The Eleanor Culhane Story” revolves around an old flame of Flint McCullough who lives in a crumbling mansion, shunned by everyone in town.

Psycho (1960 film)

In 1960, the movie shocked the world by pushing the limits both in violence and sexuality. What was originally thought to be too inappropriate for film went on to be a widely recognized classic much appreciated throughout generations of movie-lovers. The film’s major outdoor scenes, which were shot toward the end of production purposefully after the theme park had opened in early June 1990, took place at the recreated Bates Motel and Psycho house. This set was constructed using the original blueprints from the 1960 version.

In 1959, Robert Bloch wrote a suspense novel, inspired by the Ed Gein murders in Wisconsin, about a single man and his mother. When Alfred Hitchcock’s assistant, Peggy Robertson, came across this book, she decided to show it to Hitchcock even though it had already been deemed unfit for film. Once he decided to carry through with this film, he ordered Robertson to buy up every copy of Psycho so that no one would know the ending. He even went through strict security measures such as a closed set, no advanced screenings for critics, and no late entrance into the theatre once the film was released.

Clowning for Novices: History and Practice With Rose Carver

Part of the horror of Marion’s murder comes from the fact that up until that point we have so closely identified with her; her desire to pay off her fiancée’s debts and be with him, to start over, to be happy. The psychiatrist’s monologue sets up to that final, crucial shot, an explanation for how one can identify as — and temporarily, and sometimes permanently believe they are — someone else. This issue of identification is so crucial to Psycho and acts as a kind of metaphor for spectatorship itself. Ending Explained is a recurring series in which we explore the finales, secrets, and themes of interesting movies and shows, both new and old. Approaching the late ‘90s, Universal Studios became increasingly popular and was expanding into a multi-park resort. The set was still used on occasion for various small filming productions such as local commercials; regardless, the park had limited space, and the Psycho house didn’t provide much in return.

In a Hitchcock film, a door handle or a set of keys can be reimagined as one of the many “fetish objects” that precipitate a moment of suspense or psychological fracture. Similarly, a staircase not only connects “the semi-public spaces of the house with the strict private environment of bedrooms,” but, for this reason, portends deep familial crisis. Before shooting began in November, Hitchcock dispatched Green to Phoenix to scout locations and shoot the opening scene. The shot was supposed to be an aerial shot of Phoenix that slowly zoomed into the hotel window of a passionate Marion and Sam.

As a nursing student, Kaley finds her peace and sanity by visiting Universal Studios whenever she gets the chance. Her dream is to be able to visit Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Japan, and Universal Studios Singapore. The House by the Railroad was acquired by the MoMA in 1930, where it still resides today. The Psycho house is still standing on the Universal Studios lot, a very popular attraction on tours.

house in psycho

After production, the new house was moved next to the original and stayed that way until around 2003 when the new house was torn down and the motel was restored to its original appearance. Built in 1960 for the filming of Psycho, the original Psycho House was placed on the hill where the Chicken Ranch now sits overlooking the Bates Motel, which sat where Cabot Cove is today. The large mansion, said to be designed after an Edward Hopper painting titled “House by the Railroad,” set the perfect atmosphere of creepy as it loomed in the background of the motel. But, it was an earlier painting of Edward Hopper’s that made a big impression on Alfred Hitchcock. The House By the Railroad (seen below) was created in 1925 and showed a changing America, one where old houses were left out of context when railroads moved in or when “progress” altered the surroundings dramatically.

The photo above is from the Halloween Knight episode of Knight Rider (1984) and shows a hazy Psycho House at the end of Falls Lake. How many of us have stared into copies of this iconic diner scene and felt we could almost visit this spot, see the chrome detail on the coffee pots and salt shakers if we just kept focused long enough? Authorities said they were also reviewing the security protocols, including whether to restrict access to the park. The side street where Trump enters and leaves the building is off limits.

In “The Purple Room,” which aired just a month after Psycho’s initial release in 1960, a skeptic must stay in a haunted Baton Rouge mansion willed to him by his brother. The next season, the house was featured in “An Attractive Family” about a household that was more homicidal than hospitable. In 1919, Rockland County Attorney General, Thomas Gagan, bought this house along Route 9W in Haverstraw, New York. In 2020, Universal Pictures released the uncut version of the film on Blu-ray for the first time to coincide with its 60th anniversary.

Its chilling presence overlooked the theme park, and, with the help of the house’s residents, Norman Bates and Mother, also served as the perfect venue for short-lived haunt attractions. Originally built as a two-sided façade that could only be shot from one angle, the full structure was completed later on to better suit the needs of different productions. The house was put to use on TV immediately after Psycho’s release, appearing in the Old West, on creepy anthology shows and as a historical mansion. When it comes to horror movie houses, there is perhaps none more iconic than the towering mansion overlooking the Bates Motel from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. But the building’s instantly recognizable looks didn’t stop producers from using it over and over again.

During Psycho IV’s outdoor filming times, park visitors gathered around the set. The full motel was built in its current location for the filming of Psycho III in 1985, which was directed by Anthony Perkins. During filming, park guests were given the opportunity to drive by the set during breaks in production and were greeted by Anthony Perkins. As a huge Anthony Perkins fan, I desperately wish I was one of those guests that got to see the production of this movie. When Sam and Lila do not hear back from Arbogast, Sam goes to the motel to look for him.

Because of this, the Psycho House remains at the top of my list of my favorite attractions at this park. As Jacobs shows in twenty-six floor plans produced exclusively for the book, Hitchcock was very much conscious of the architectural plan and its role in a scene. That isn’t to say he put great store by the ideological or functional implications of the plan.

‘Stock units’ were taken from existing structures and pieced together to create whatever the studio needed at the time. As a result, the tower section of the Bates house actually came from another home set that stands on Universal’s back lot. Marion's sister Lila arrives in Fairvale a week later, tells Sam about the theft, and demands to know where Marion is. A private investigator named Arbogast approaches them, saying that he has been hired to retrieve the money. He stops at the Bates Motel and questions Norman, whose nervous behavior and inconsistent answers arouse his suspicion.

The Fascinating Story of The House Behind the Bates Mansion in Hitchcocks 1960 Classic

But, of course, you can see the Bates’ Mansion anytime you want just by turning on one of the greatest horror flicks of all time. The set for the house in Psycho was actually assembled from parts of the Harvey House, a Universal Studios set that had been used in the Jimmy Stewart film Harvey in 1950, but the design was heavily influenced by the Hopper painting. Some officers and bystanders rushed to the aid of the man, who was hospitalized in critical condition at the time. NEW YORK (AP) — The man who doused himself in an accelerant and set himself on fire outside the courthouse where former President Donald Trump is on trial has died, police said. Paramedics John and Roy help an elderly woman in the mansion get to safety. Its chief provocations—that architecture can be equated to set design, or that Hitchcock was a kind of architect—are nominally justified if not entirely original.

Clowning for Novices: History and Practice With Rose Carver

The Bates mansion and its large hill took up a large, valuable plot of land in the park. The facades, while still exciting for horror fans, didn’t offer much to theme park guests. Since the structures had no interior, guests could not actually enter these attractions or come close to them.

It first served as the backdrop for a show in the first-ever Fright Nights and then for Psycho-themed haunted houses as featured in the third and fourth years of Halloween Horror Nights. Other on-site filming locations included Universal Studios’ broadcast center and the Swamp Thing set in the back of the park.

After Norman says goodnight to Marion, we journey with him up the nearby hill and into the first floor of the house, where he sits down at the kitchen table dejected and embarrassed by his inability to converse with Marion. The camera follows him there as a misdirect aimed to convince us that Norman played no part in what will soon happen in the motel bathroom. She kills the private investigator Arbogast (Martin Balsam), who only gets to the top of the stairs before she knocks him back down with the force of her knife. Briefly during filming for the movie’s flashback sequences of a teenage Norman and young Norma Bates, the house was given a fresh yellow coat of paint, and the motel was spruced up to be lively and inviting.

For a long, long time before the story really begins, Great Aunt Victoria’s house had been standing behind its high iron fence. Its steep roofs had pointed up against the sky, and its tall windows had looked out over fine gardens. And for all that long time, too, Great Aunt Victoria’s house had been painted the color of chocolate cake. This was an ostentatious, luxurious style of house which shouted money. It is intimidating to write about Psycho — a film I love deeply — because there has been more writing about it than one could ever read in a year or two, let alone in preparation for writing an article in a week.

Inside the Psycho House

The 2013 "contemporary prequel" television series Bates Motel sets the motel in the fictional town of White Pine Bay, Oregon. According to Robert Bloch's source novel, it was originally built when Norma's fiancée Joe Considine persuaded her to sell the farmland she owned and build a motel on the land between the family house and the highway. When a new highway opened, with a junction to the old highway approximately 30 miles away, the number of visitors to the motel declined sharply. The drawings are “reconstructions of spaces that never existed,” Jacobs says, and as such, they don’t always make sense architecturally.

Hitchcock called this inclination a “natural instinct,” and noted that audiences experienced a fleeting sense of relief when the car finally sinks. The film ends with the famous shot of Norman (or Mother), a blanket wrapped around his (her) shoulders. The voice of Mother tells us that she had to take over because Norman was trying to blame her for the murders. A fly lands on Norman’s hand, and Mother tells us she is not going to swat it away.

Sets like Manderlay, the mansion in Rebecca, are plagued by inconsistencies, many of which are nonetheless impossible to spot on the screen. Superfluous sectional changes and baroque nooks are introduced to accommodate the sweep of the camera or, in many cases, a single camera position. Even when the sets are consistent, their design reveals the hand of a particularly inept architect. The plan for the Bates house in Psycho, for instance, gives you an idea about how oppressively small Norman’s bedroom is.

The standing set was on a relatively large plot of land with no guest pathway leading directly to the structures. Universal Studios Florida, with heavy ties to Hollywood, was designed to double as a working film studio. Universal Studios Florida was slated to open to guests in summer 1990, and the park’s studio portion was available as soon as mid-1988 for filming.
